Does photinia cause problems for hayfever sufferers?
i have done (what i thought was) a fair bit of research on photinia x fraseri to plant as a hedge in our yard. someone has just told me that this plant can be deadly for hayfever sufferers??!! can anyone shed some light on this matter as we have hayfever sufferers in our household.
photinia sheds an amazing amount of pollen…….. if the shrub is of good size, say over six ft, it can cover a car that’s parked near it with enuff to write ‘wash me’ in the layer…….and if it’s there when it rains, it makes ‘mud’ rather than just washing off….. need good windshield wipers!!……. reason number TWO why mine are no longer in the parking area at my house……number one was that they were afflicted with the disease that’s hitting them so hard around here…..(however, if the pollen doesn’t BOTHER your allergies, there’s no reason to avoid it…. just don’t plant it next to the driveway!… *smile*)
The best thing for a photenia is a chain saw.
Leaf spot will slowly kill the crummy shrub.
Replace with one of the numerous hollies and you will be trouble free for the next 40 years.
