Is there anyone who can tell me about an abandoned location at Mater Air Force Base that Im curious about?
There’s an abandoned place past the golfcourse at Mather that is surrounded by barbed wire fencing. It obviously hasn’t been used in years because things there wouldn’t have been used recently (I’m guessing 1940’s or 50’s at most). It’s strange because it has a small hospital, bunkers, a guard tower, a number of garages and other strange things. I thought it may have been part of the internment camp that was there in WWII but it’s not according to my research. Any ideas?
I looked into the possibility of the area being the Army Aviation Support Facility, but there is no runway nearby that we can see and there are no hangers for aircraft, just vehicle garages.
It sounds like the Mather Army Aviation Support Facility of the California Air National Guard. Not all of Mather was converted to civilian use. The nearest Japanese Internment camp was at Tule Lake, some distance north of Marysville.
