What would be the best driver for a beginner golfer?
First of all let me say upfront, I am not a very good golfer. I have a driver that has a 10 degree loft on it but would it help me get the ball up if I had a driver that had more loft. Secondly I do not want to pay very much for this driver because at the time I am not very good.
Get the Ping G5. It’s a wonderful club!
Get a cheap one. Let me tell you a secret. Its not the clubs that make a good golfer, its the swing. You will get much better if you spend your money on golf lessons and practice at the driving range than you will spending your money on expensive clubs and still having a defective swing.
Get one at Wally world and give it a try. Been my experience that it is probably mroe technique than driver though. I had an old wood driver and took it to a local golf pro. He was showing me some stuff and I was doing better but still told him I wanted a Big Ass driver…..he took my old wood and cranked it about 280 yds. I learned alot right then. He was at least 6 inches shorter and 100 lbs lighter. I learned technique sometimes beats power…I learned that good equipment without technique wont raise my score and I learned that even if you want to tirn someone into a popsicle using a driver, its not a good thing to act on it……;)
It definitely isn’t the gear that makes the golfer. I’m also totally new to golf. I stink at golf. I’m a newb, too. But I’ve seen guys who splurged on all the gear and gizmos and fancy clubs who suck worse than I do.
Your best bet to find a club that is really going to suit you is to hit a place like Golfers Warehouse, where you can try lots of clubs out before buying them. The same goes for some courses. They may have demo clubs you can take out for a round. A buddy of mine hit that new Nike square headed driver that goes for like 400 bucks the other day and all he had to do was hand over his credit card in case he stole the club (no charge otherwise).
A last resort may be to try out Wal Mart. They have some clubs, mostly cheap and knock-off versions. But they’re a lot lighter on the wallet.
My driver is 10.5 loft. The loft on your shots will come as you get better, I think. My drives are still improving (and straightening!) but they definitely got higher as I got better at hitting the ball. Loft helps, I think, but it’s going to be more a matter of how you’re teeing the ball (I tee high) and how you swing.
RAM makes decent drivers for beginners. The 10 degree loft should be fine…but you could also try an 11 or 12. But if you are having trouble getting the ball up, practice and play with your three wood…then graduate to your driver. Remember, a proper drive will not have the high trajectory, as it should be a lower, more boring path…good luck…and keep at it. Well worth it, I promise!!
well, if you want a cheap and good club, then get a pinemeadow or a topflite. They are pretty good and hit decent. Perfect club for a beginner.
Here’s what I would do…check out ebay for a good used driver. There are tons of them on there and you can get good deals. A 10 degree driver probably isn’t a bad loft for you, but depending on your swing speed, launch angle, etc., an 11 degree driver probably wouldn’t hurt you.
A good driver to look for would be a used Taylor Made r7 425, the old Nike Sasquach, Cleveland Launcher, Callaway Fusion FT-3. Be sure to check the shaft stiffness. If you have a quick swing speed, a stiff will be more than enough, but otherwise, go with a regular flex. Hope this helps.
the Dunlop Goliath. It is 40 bucks and a great starter driver you can find it at Modells.
the cheapest one , a better driver will not help you at all if you are just learning how to hit the ball.
